Water Fluoridation Implementation Update PDF Print E-mail
Written by Heather Gold

The Queensland Government announced in December 2007 that it would implement mandatory fluoridation of public water supplies where the supply serviced populations of 1000 or more persons.  The Department of Infrastructure and Planning (DIP) is the lead Agency for this project, providing strategic management and responsibility for ensuring the delivery of infrastructure in relation to the fluoridation plants.  DIP has established an Infrastructure Project Management Group (IPMG) which will assist regional councils in implementing fluoridation in drinking water supplies.
DIP is currently formally advising Councils of the process for the roll-out of fluoridation and a letter was sent to all CEO's on 10 November 2008.  The letter explains the arrangements for the IPMG as well as reiterating the timetable for fluoridation of the State.  The two available subsidies are also summarised, namely a capital subsidy available to all councils and the "Smaller Communities Fluoridation Operating Grants Scheme" for communities with fewer than 1700 residential connections.  A copy of the letter can be accessed in the member's area of the website, www.qldwater.com.au, under main menu/water issues/fluoridation.  Members must log in first to access the information.
