There is a great connection in nature and keeping the balance right seems to be one of the great challenges of our time. In our efforts to promote the quality of our tap water in Queensland, we stumbled across the huge impact plastic litter is having on our local, and indeed the global, environment and we are determined to help raise awareness.

We are joining forces with IPWEAQ, Unitywater and Arrow Alpha Industries to make LOGOV a bottled water free event this year and, in the process, hope to save thousands of single-use plastic bottles ending up in landfill. At the same time we hope to prove to attendees just how great how tap water tastes through the qldwater on tap campaign.

Recent data from Healthy Waterways showed a 50% increase in plastic water bottles collected during clean-ups of the SEQ catchments over the past three years and even though some bottles do get recycled, recycling itself is still an energy intensive process. Perhaps the addition of a fourth R (Refuse) should be leading the way in the well-known Reduce, Reuse, Recycle slogan.

We tend to take the water that comes out of our taps for granted, so raising awareness of the people and processes involved in delivering a good quality product at extremely low cost straight to our homes is important in our effort to build water-wise communities.

The qldwater on tap campaign aims to promote the services that the water industry provides and its valuable, skilled staff to the community, while looking at the health and cost benefits of choosing tap over other water sources.

We are not interested in promoting negative messages but will do our bit where we can. This starts by increasing the availability of tap water in public spaces and at community events. Unitywater joined us in our quest by securing a water trailer that will be launched at LOGOV this year and subsequently be available for use at community events on the Sunshine Coast.

There are also some great new designs for water bubblers and water refill stations. Arrow Alpha Industries has kindly offered a portable refill station for our booth and will have more on display at LOGOV, so make sure you drop in to collect and refill your reusable water bottle.

We also found an alignment of key messages with Healthy Waterways through their Plastic Pollution Revolution campaign. Their LOGOV display will feature Natrasha Turtle, a recycled artwork made from old plastic bottles and stuffed with plastic bags. With 30% of turtle deaths in the Moreton Bay region caused by plastic pollution, Natrasha will serve as a reminder to reduce our waste. Another reason to drink tap!

So let’s have our water on tap and drink to a safe, secure and sustainable urban water industry!
