The Water Operations - Civil program (previously 'Water Industry Worker Program') was developed in partnership with qldwater, government, industry and training providers to help retain skilled staff and improve future opportunities for workers through industry specific training. A trial of Water Operations (Civil) was completed in South East Queensland in late 2009 with 22 graduates. Since then there have been well over 100 participants in the program across Queensland.
The Water Operations - Civil program is focused on the formal recognition of skills and training employees within the civil construction and maintenance field in the water industry. Participants undertake either a Certificate II or III in Water Operations - Civil from the National Water Training Package.
The program provides a practical approach to valuing existing skills. The Water Operations -Civil qualifications are nationally recognised, providing access to job opportunities nationally, while up-to-date training and broader career paths offer opportunities for promotion and professional development.
The process includes a recognition of prior learning (RPL) component followed by gap training in specific areas where the participant cannot demonstrate current competency. The RPL process involves the gathering of evidence such as paperwork of jobs completed as well as questioning and supervisor reports. For participants who undertake the program online, ongoing support from a qualified assessor is available.
