Richmond claims title for West Queensland's top drop
Date: 02-Sep-2014

Richmond Shire Council residents can rest assured that their water is going to taste a whole lot better in the near future, with attendees at the Queensland Water Directorate’s regional conference giving water from its pilot treatment plant top scores in the western Queensland final of the Orica Australia Best of the Best Queensland Water Taste Test last week.

For years Richmond residents have requested that Council improve the quality of water it supplies, complaining of the odour and the staining from the iron and manganese. Council secured funding of $3.6 million from the State Government to assist in development and installation of a first class water treatment plant for the residents of Richmond, and commissioned Aeramix to design and implement the plant.

Richmond Shire Council CEO, Peter Bennett, said the plant will be fully commissioned by December 2014, making it the perfect Christmas present for the town.

“Council is also conducting a major overhaul of its water mains with $1 million being spent this calendar year. These two projects will ensure that the residents of Richmond will have the best water in Queensland from the end of the year and into the considerable future. This award showcases the hard work the Richmond Shire Council has gone through to get the best result possible.”

Water from the pilot plant trumped water samples from Mount Isa and Barcaldine.

The six regional finalists will contest the grand final prize to be held at the Institute of Public Works Engineers Queensland State Conference from 8 – 10 October 2014. The regional winners to date include:

  • South East Queensland: Bundaberg Regional Council’s Lovers Walk Scheme
  • South West Queensland: Toowoomba Regional Council’s Mt Kynoch Water Treatment Plant
  • Central Queensland: Rockhampton Regional Council’s Glenmore Water Treatment Plant
  • North Queensland: Mackay Regional Council’s Nebo Road Water Treatment Plant

Good luck to all the contestants, and may the best tasting water win!

Aeramix Manager Tech Services, Mark Samblebe, accepted the award on behalf of Richmond Shire Council.
