Congratulations to Rockhampton Regional Council who reclaimed the title of top drop in Central Queensland with attendees at the Queensland Water Directorate’s regional conference giving it top scores in the Orica Australia Best of the Best Queensland Water Taste Test on Friday, 13 June 2014.

Water from the Glenmore Water Treatment Plant was selected as the best tasting tap water in the Central Queensland region, trumping water samples from Gladstone Regional Council, Banana Shire Council and Central Highlands Regional Council.

Council’s Water Committee Chair, Councillor Greg Belz said that Council is proud of the great work undertaken by Fitzroy River Water’s (FRW) water treatment operators in providing such a great quality product to their customers 24/7.

“The Fitzroy River is the primary water source for Rockhampton and Gracemere residents with treatment taking place at the Glenmore Water Treatment Plant using conventional treatment processes including flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, and chlorination before distribution,” Cr Belz said.

“I would like to congratulate the team at FRW for their achievement in maintaining a high quality drinking water supply for our Region not only at the Glenmore Water Treatment Plant but also at the Mount Morgan Water Treatment Plant,” he said.

Rockhampton’s Glenmore Water Treatment Plant also won the CQ title in 2012, but was ousted by Gladstone Regional Council’s Springs Road Water Treatment Plant in Agnes Water last year.

Conference attendees at the Queensland Water Directorate’s six regional events use a scientifically tested Water Tasting Wheel to help navigate their gustative-olfactory senses in their quest to find Queensland’s best-tasting water.

Two other regional finals have been held to date, with Bundaberg Regional Council’s Lovers Walk Scheme winning the South East Queensland title and Toowoomba Regional Council’s Mt Kynoch Water Treatment Plant in South West Queensland.  Bundaberg also beat the 2014 NSW winner in the second Water of Origin competition at the Water Industry Operators Association of Australia Conference a couple of weeks ago.

The taste test is a light-hearted way to promote the hard work of local authorities in delivering quality water services to Queensland communities.  The six regional finalists will contest the grand final prize to be held at the Institute of Public Works Engineers Queensland State Conference from 8 – 10 October 2014.

The competition coincides with six regional conferences and an annual Water Connections Tour that aims to link Queensland water service providers with technical and management expertise to help plan and support their community’s future water supply and sewerage infrastructure needs.

The remaining regional events in 2014 include Mackay on 29 July, Mount Isa on 21 August and Innisfail on 11 September.
